Starting your own business

business_plan_small.jpgSo, you think you want to start your own business do you? Are you fed up making money for someone else?  Do you have a brilliant business idea or an opportunity just waiting for you to breathe life into it? Have you lost your job? After going through the trials of redundancy once, or several times, it can seem very tempting to start your own business - especially if you're lucky enough to be given a lump sum settlement.

According to the DTi some 75% of firms are started from scratch, most are established within six months, and 80-90% are still trading after twelve months of starting up.

Whatever your motivation to become an entrepreneur, you're never too old to start either. Oldpreneur Ray Kroc didn't start MacDonalds until he was 52 years old! If you're short of inspirational role models check out some of these stories on
start-ups, or check out Dragons Den star Duncan Bannatyne's site The Sharp Edge.

Entrepreneur or 'alterpreneur'?

There is a growing trend of what are being dubbed as 'alterpreneurs'. These are people quitting corporate life to start their own businesses as a lifestyle rather than a career choice. Research shows that 60% of those surveyed said they wanted to get more control over their lives, and 54% said they made their entrepreneurial move in order to be 'happier'. They make up nearly 70% of the UK's small business market, running approximately 2 million micro-businesses and generating over £2 billion in annual revenue.

Women are also starting up more and more new businesses, these so called 'Kitchen Table Tycoons' or 'Mumpreneurs' are finding that it is the only viable way to create the work-life balance that they want.
