Middle Class and Jobless?

Posted on Thursday, 17 September 2009 07:58AM by Janet Davies, Editor newlifenetwork.co.uk
If you didn't catch the Dispatches programme "Middle Class and Jobless" when it was first shown on Channel Four on Monday night you can still catch it on the 'play later' feature on the internet here http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches/4od#2970762.

There are a number of interviews with real people with real problems that people in the same situation should find very interesting. If you are "middle class and unemployed" and haven't signed on, it may be worth you putting your concerns (and your pride) aside and registering as, not only does every little help, but for the Government to take this crisis seriously you need to be an actual statistic not a suspected or hidden one. Just don't expect the JobcentrePlus database or the staff to help you find a professional job though, you'll find a far better selection of resources and advice here.

When it comes finding an alternative income stream (because another job just like your old one may not be feasible) think about what you want to do, what skills you have to offer and what employers will be prepared to pay you to do. Plan before you apply for a job, make sure your CV reflects you and your plan, and make sure if you get an interview that you prepare for it properly and make a good first impression. Think laterally about your opportunities for work, who you know, who knows you and what value you could add - competing for advertised jobs against many other competitors will not necessarily work for you if you don't have the kind of straightforward career pattern that pressured recruiters feel they can sell to employers.

If you really are at a loss, consider investing in a career coach. You'll find more tips and advice for Senior Executives here .
