Discrimination at work

Working together works! If you think about it hard enough, the whole process of recruitment and getting promoted is actually discriminatory. Discrimination at work on the grounds of talent or merit, provided that what constitutes talent or merit in a given situation is transparent, fair and reasonable, isn't something that most of us have a problem with. There are currently no laws outlawing that thankfully.

Laws are there for a reason

There are laws, however, to protect people against other forms of discrimination at work. That's because they have actually been given a raw deal in the past and the legislation is one means of remedying those situations.

We have laws to protect us from, for example, gender, racial and disability discrimination.  Certain unenlightened cultures and attitudes in the workplace do still prevail nevertheless, whether we like it or not. That's why we've listed some reference sites here that may help you.

Adopt zero tolerance for unfair discrimination in the workplace

The best way to fight discrimination is to fight it on the grounds of talent and merit - of our abilities, achievements and our ideas. If we can encourage ourselves and others to see talented people first, who just happen to be e.g. black, male, female, foreign, Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, gay, disabled, young, old or whatever the perceived barrier to success and opportunity might be, then we'll all be better off. Let's not become either the victims or the perpetrators of unfair discrimination.
